Gem & Silver Care

Colored Gemstones

There are many types of colored gemstones, some of which require specific care and cleaning procedures. It is ridiculous to mention them all on this page. However, there are some general cleaning and care procedures that apply to all colored gemstone jewelry.

Many natural gemstones are treated and/or enhanced from the time they are extracted from the earth by one or more traditionally accepted jewelry industry practices. These treatments and enhancements can affect how you should clean and care for your colored gemstone jewelry. Consult your jeweler for more information on caring for treated and or enhanced gemstones.

After wearing, wipe tour precious gemstone jewelry thoroughly with a clean soft cotton cloth that is slightly damp. This will enhance the gemstone’s luster and ensure that your jewelry is clean before storage.

Store gemstone pieces individually in soft cloth pouches. You should be able to obtain these from your jeweler, or you can order them from us.

DO NOT! expose your gemstone jewelry, or any jewelry for that matter, to salt water or harsh chemicals, such as chlorine or detergents. These chemicals may slowly erode the finish and polish of your gemstones.

Hair spray, perfumes, and perspiration may cause jewelry to become dull. Apply all cosmetics perfumes, and colognes before you put on your gemstone jewelry. Make sure to wipe your gemstones after wear to remove any chemicals, oils, or perspiration.

DO NOT! subject gemstone jewelry to sudden temperature changes, as this could cause your gemstone to crack and/or shatter.

If you live an active lifestyle, you should take precautions when wearing gemstone jewelry. Emeralds for example, are very brittle and should not be worn when doing household chores or any activity where the stone could be hit or damaged.

Be extra careful with the use of ultrasonic cleaners. Some gemstones are very fragile and can be damaged by the use of an ultrasonic cleaner. Consult your jeweler for the best procedures for your particular gemstone jewelry. Jumps International does not use or recommend the use of an ultrasonic cleaner on any of our pieces.

Sterling Silver Jewelry

Sterling Silver, like other precious metals, can oxidize (tarnish) with time. But properly maintained silver jewelry improves with age and develops a lush patina. Treat your silver well, care for it properly and it will reward you with a long life and a lustrous look.

Clean your silver jewelry with a mild soap and water, allowing the water to bead up, and then pat dry with a soft cotton cloth. For stubborn grime, and hard to get to areas, use a old soft tooth brush to softly scrub away  the particles of grime.

Store silver in a cool dry place, preferably in a tarnish preventive bag or wrapped in a soft felt or cotton cloth. Store pieces individually so that they don’t bump up against each other and scratch.

DO NOT! rub silver with anything other than a polishing cloth, felt or cotton. Your jeweler should be able to obtain a polishing cloth for you or you could purchase one from us. Tissue paper and paper towel can create scratches on the surface of your silver because of the type of fibers these products contain.

Make sure your silver is not exposed to air and light during storage. This can cause your silver to tarnish.

DO NOT! wear silver in chlorinated water such as a swimming pool or when working with any household cleaners and/ or chemicals.
